I’ve known about the birthing stones for a long time, but only now have they crossed my path to help me shout out loud: Pedra que pariu!
Beyond the simplicity of the materials and gestures that make up the pieces presented are several layers of different states of emotion and consciousness. There is also the harshness of the work that is done in silence, over a long period of time, and which claims nothing more than its bare existence – to exist in order to be contemplated.
Immobile, rigid, granitic, and millenary, after centuries of invisible and silent work, the birthing stones also give birth.
Rita Senra (Barcelos, 1993) lives and works in Porto. She has a degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. Her artistic practice develops mainly through drawing and installation, favoring paper as a raw material. Rita intervenes in various ways over different papers, testing the limits of their physical resistance so that they can endure; thus, in her work, fragility is a constant feature and emerges to reclaim the strength and importance of what appears vulnerable. She has been showing her work since 2014 in collective and individual exhibitions. Her work is part both of private collections and the Porto Municipal Art Collection. She has been a member of Sismógrafo since 2016.
