SCOBY Works is a workshop developed in the context of Mute Track, Bianca Hlywa’s exhibition at Sismógrafo. It will begin with a guided visit to the exhibition, followed by a demonstration on how to grow SCOBY at home, with growth kits for participants. The session will also include an opportunity to get physical and crafty with these wet microbial slabs, using techniques from Bianca Hlywa's practice.

Bianca Hlywa's (Canada, 1992) interdisciplinary practice emerges from an analysis of a cultural infrastructure defined by polarities inherited from modernity: life/non-life, good/bad, and artificial/natural. Her work seeks to make visible the ways in which these notions have shaped the norms of contemporary politics and aesthetics. This is done by challenging them using a visceral and curious materiality: oftentimes, SCOBY (Symbiotic Cultures Of Bacterial Yeast), grown to enormous proportions.
