Coisa Comum is an operative concept to address some of the land-use planning processes, understood in the light of the transmission of inheritances, especially those derived from uses and customs. A speculative exercise that aims to analyze layers of meanings and functions that overlap and dialogue through the creation of “communicating vessels” — bridges between apparently irreconcilable scales, patterns, and dimensions — to explore the tensions and spaces of interaction between ideas, forms, and contexts that persist at different historical moments and mark the relationship with place.
Hélder Folgado (Madeira, 1983) lives and works in Funchal. His practice has centered around human geography and the mechanisms of cultural transmission, with special focus on the relationships between territory, identity, and collective memory. He explores and combines different expressive media in close relation to the specificities of spaces and communities, maintaining a constant commitment to art as a platform for social and political mediation. In addition to his artistic practice, he is the artistic director at Capela da Boa Viagem, in Funchal, where he promotes the presentation of works by other artists, broadening the dialogue between different perspectives about contemporary artistic practices.
